Print: Puffin Plunge

This puffin was captured off the coast of Newfoundland near Witless Bay near one of the largest breeding colonies of puffins in the world. Every year they gather on the islands off-shore to raise their young in burrows. When the fledglings finally leave the nest, they are drawn to the light of the moon to find their way. The nearby town of Witless Bay has formed a “puffin patrol” to rescue wayward fledglings every year in late summer that are drawn to the city lights. The young puffins cannot take off from land, and would have become prey, or been run over by vehicles.
