CAPA First Merit Monochrome Animal

Lead Mare, First Merit in Monochrome (Animal) by CAPA in 2021

Lead Mare
These mares in the Camargue of southern France have been together for many years. Horses have a strong social structure; communication can become quite subtle when they’ve lived together for long periods. A flick of an ear or a swing of a head will remind other members of the group who is higher in the social structure. In this image, the lead mare is reminding another horse that she is the leader and will direct the herd.
The photograph was awarded a 1st Merit Award with the Canadian Association for Photographic Art (CAPA). The image was part of a 4-image individual entry to the CAPA Monocrhome competition in 2021. “Lead Mare” went on to be selected by CAPA as part of Canada’s entry to the Four Nation’s competition in 2021. This competition is held annually between Canada, Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.
